Walkabouts at the Gauteng Regional Exhibition

Three well known personalities and Fellows of Ceramics Southern Africa will lead walkabouts and discussions during the exhibition

WEDNESDAY – 17 APRIL – 14:00 - Eugene Hön and John Shirley

Eugene Hön -
taught as a lecturer at the TWR from 1986-1989, was Programme Leader Ceramic Dept. from 1990-1999, HoD Three Dimensional Design-Jewellery, Industrial Design & Ceramics in 1999, Acting Dean, FADA 2000, Executive Dean FADA 2001-2006 and since 2007 has been Senior Lecturer Ceramic Design at what is now the University of Johannesburg.
He has work in the permanent Corobrik Collection at the Pretoria Art Museum and has served on many committees, societies and professional bodies.
Eugene has exhibited and been involved in commission projects since 1985 and is avid about what he does and makes a valuable contribution in his field of expertise.

John Shirley -
has held a number of solo exhibitions and participated in a number of group exhibitions since 1972 throughout South Africa, and has been participating in APSA/Ceramics SA Regional and National Exhibitions since 1975. He has also exhibited his crystal glazed ware at the South African Embassy in Japan.
John was the Programme Leader and lecturer in Ceramic Design at the University of Johannesburg since 2003 and currently lectures there in a part-time capacity.
He now runs his mentorship Programme on a regular basis and also teaches ceramics at The Pottery Studio in Bryanston
He has numerous pieces in the Corobrik Collection in Pretoria and had a piece selected for the 5th World Ceramic Biennale in Korea (CEBIKO) 2009.

WEDNESDAY – 24 APRIL – 12  noon - Wendy Goldblatt

Wendy runs her own teaching studio, works in stoneware and porcelain and has exhibited at Regional and National exhibitions.
She enjoys teaching – “making ceramics is sometimes a lonely occupation and teaching keeps you in touch with people and makes you look at things through other eyes”.  She enjoys attending courses on different aspects of ceramics and received inspiration through Suzette Munnik’s course on Background/Foreground. She specializes in one off porcelain and stoneware pieces with an emphasis on decoration.
Wendy started the South African Crafts Council with Eugene Hön in 1991 as she felt the crafts in South Africa needed an umbrella body to represent them on broader issues.

SATURDAY – 27 APRIL – 14:00 - John Shirley
will lead another walkabout and discussion before the exhibition closes on the 28th of April.

Digby Hoets' Studio

Digby and Penny Hoets' garden at 125, Springfield Rd, is one of four gardens in Midrand's Carlswald Valley that are open to the public on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 March from 10 am to 5 pm. The event is organised by Gardens of the Golden City to raise funds for three charities and non-profit organisations* and the entry fee is R20 per person per garden.
The Carlswald Valley is one of Johannesburg's most beautiful (and least known) suburbs. Most properties are between one and two hectares in size and provide a welcome calm, green respite from the surrounding high density residential and retail developments. The Carlswald Valley ranges from granite ridges along Norfolk Rd with (increasingly endangered) indigenous trees and vegetation (as can be seen in Candice and Alan Fuller's garden at 94/1 Norfolk Rd), through wetlands and mainly indigenous trees and grasses on Digby's property at 125 Springfield Rd, to a series of dams and koi ponds at Thula Manzi guest house at the base of the valley at 68/1 Norfolk Rd. The Tuareg Guest House at 44/1 Norfolk Rd is completely different and reflects its owner's love of the Middle-East - Tuareg has donated a 2 night stay at the bed and breakfast for which raffle tickets will be on sale at each garden and there will be a tea-garden open on both days. Cinda Hunter has her unique 'shop' at 125 Springfield Rd. She will be open on Saturday and Sunday. Cinda travels extensively to source her furniture, artefacts, textiles, clothing and accessories from India, South East Asia and Africa.
