Workshops in McGregor, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth & Gauteng, April/May 2014

Millstone Pottery has invited Ruthanne Tudball to present a 3-day workshop at our studio in McGregor in April. The workshop will include slide presentations, throwing demonstrations, kiln packing and soda glaze firing.   Whilst in the country, Ruthanne will also give day-long workshops in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Gauteng.**

 Ruthanne is an expert in the art of soda glazing, and has published a highly acclaimed book on the subject “Soda Glazing” published by A&C Black. Ruthanne’s ceramics are distinct in several respects. Foremost is the method she uses to create her work. “All of my work is thrown and manipulated while wet on the wheel. In an attempt to capture the softness in the finished piece, I do very little turning, and when the turning is done, it mainly happens at the soft stage. After firing and transforming the clay to stone, that softness can still be seen.” Her work is very organic and imprecise. She draws her inspiration from the natural world around her and the energy in the evolving landscape. Ruthanne’s second unique approach is in her firing technique. She uses a combination of wood and gas – uses no glazes but instead slips and the heated ash to transform her work. The careful stacking of the kiln encourages the flow of the flame and vapour through the chamber and around the pots.“Sodium vapour glazing emphasises the marks and rhythms of making, picks out every line. Spouts and lips for pouring, handles to invite lifting and balance, feet for stability and elegance – these are some aspects of looking at function and sharing with others which hold my attention when making pots. My inspiration comes mainly from the natural world around me and the energy in the evolving landscape, celebrating the rhythms and creative forces of the earth and the human body.”

She will also share a slide presentation of her techniques for creating slip-decorated stoneware vapour fired in a wood/gas kiln. Ruthanne works with clay in a magical way, really understanding and working with the properties of soft clay. I think this is the workshop that people will refer to as the one they wish they had attended." The 3-day workshop will be held at Millstone Pottery in McGregor, from 26 to 28 April 2013 and will cost R3 000, including meals. You will have an opportunity to put pots into a wood-fired soda kiln during the workshop.

11h00 to 11h30 Judy Bryant will present an illustrated talk on her visit to Helsinki when that city was World Design capital. She will discuss Finnish design with emphasis on ceramics and her visit to the Arabia ceramic factory.

Esther Esmyol is the curator of the Iziko Social History Collection which includes ceramics She has extensive knowledge of South African ceramics and was instrumental in establishing the Granary Gallery ‘s FIRED installation at the Castle and initiated the 101 place settings exhibition in 2012

Judy Bryant is a public relations and media services provider, with a strong interest in design and heritage. She visited Helsinki in September 2012, during its International Design Week. The presentation gives a brief overview of Finland and its design movement; explanation of how Helsinki rolled out WDC2012, with examples of diverse projects, what potential WDC2014 holds for SA and information and images of a visit to the Arabia ceramics factory, and the latest ceramic home-ware range just launched by iittala, in collaboration with six of Finland’s leading designers. 

Low Fire Jamboree at Millstone Pottery

	15, 16 & 17 March 2013

A week-end celebrating low technology, low temperature firing and making techniques for ceramists, potters and other romantics. Workshops cater for all levels of skill. Beginners welcome. This Low-Fire Jamboree includes: Making traditional Pueblo pots Pit firing Raku Low temperature salt firing Building and firing a paper kiln Workshops: Explore the low-fire technique of burnished and pit-fired, "polychrome" painted ceramics withIan Garrett and John Newdigate. This technique first appeared in the Neolithic era (roughly 6000 BCE) - and is associated with early farming communities all over the world. Famous examples include Yang-shao ceramics from Kansu in China, Cucuteni ceramics from Romania as well as Nasca and Inca ceramics from South America. The most famous continuing tradition is found in the recent historic and contemporary styles of Native American Pueblo potters. In the workshop participants will make vessels using a traditional Pueblo "Puki" or base-mould. The leather-hard pots will be scraped and then coated with a liquid-clay slip which is burnished as it dries. This creates a "canvass" onto which oxide and clay pigments can be painted. The completed pots will be pit-fired to impart the subtle tonal-variations that give this technique great visual richness. Paul has been making high-temperature wood-fired pots in McGregor for the past 15 years, where he has built 5 wood-fired kilns. South African ceramic artists are invited to submit place settings for the installation of ‘Dinner for 101’ in the Lady Anne Barnard Banqueting Hall at the Castle of Good Hope.

Each participant may provide work in one of the following categories:

· a single place setting (e.g. a plate/side plate/bowl; or a tea/coffee set; or similar items);

· a centrepiece for the middle of the table (which may take the form of a fruit bowl, candlestick, vase, cake stand, large platter or similar items).

· 2012 is the second year this lovely event is being held.

· Six art galleries in the village - and a little beyond - will show ceramics for a couple of weeks all at the same time. It works - and it is such a pleasure to wander - Meander! - from gallery to gallery and see so much excellent South African pottery.

· Franschhoek is exactly the right place to do this – there are some good little galleries - and plenty of pit stops for food and liquid refreshments.

· It’s a safe village, so your vehicles can be safely parked and left.

· Each gallery does its own thing - showing whatever they choose – which means each venue is a new discovery!

A week-end celebrating low technology, low temperature firing and making techniques for ceramists, potters and other romatics. Workshops cater for all levels of skill. Beginners welcome. This Low-Fire Jamboree includes: · Low temperature salt firing · Pit firing · Raku · Making coiled vessels · Making whistles Workshops:         Explore re-creating experimental coiled vessels from the stone-age "Beaker" tradition with Ian Garrett, during an "archaeological reconstruction" workshop. Ian is well-known for his hand-built burnished vessels inspired by ancient ceramci techniques. These combine forms from pre-historic Eurpoe and India with more contemporary African traditions. www.iangarrettceramics.com         Fire your own pre-made (or provided) pots in a low-tech updraft bottle kiln using wood and salt with Paul de Jongh. Paul has been making high-temperature wood-fired pots in McGregor for the past 15 years, where he has built 5 wood-fired kilns. The bottle kiln was built by Paul and Ian specifically as a workshop tool to demonstrate low temperature wood-firing. www.millstonepottery.co.za         Raku-fire your pre-made pots (or teabowls provided), also with Paul, who raku-fires in a ceramic fibre kiln using gas.         Pit-fire your vessels using cow dung, wood bark, dried aloe leaves and small twigs which impart various lustrous terracotta tones to the work. Wood-firing Workshop with Paul de Jongh

Millstone Pottery Wood-firing Workshop 29, 30 April & 1 May 2011

An intimate week-end workshop celebrating this ancient and time-honoured firing method; for ceramicists, potters and other romantics wanting to have work fired in a wood-fired kiln. Specialised attention to all attendees.

Make your pots at a pre-firing teabowl workshop to ensure your efforts are rewarded when firing the kiln. This workshop will be held on 9 April at CPS in Somerset West.

Workshops and events planned over the week-end include:

• decorating and glazing for wood-firing with Paul de Jongh
• firing of train or salt kiln
• participatory continuous slab building with Hennie Meyer
• powerpoint presentation with Clementina van der Walt
• "Elemental" - a film about Ken Matsuzaki, a Japanese wood-firing potter
• journey along the McGregor art route

Western Cape AGM

The Western Cape Region of Ceramics Southern Africa is having their Annual General Meeting on Saturday 13 March 2010 at the Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town.

The proceedings will start at 09H00 with a light breakfast followed by the meeting at 10H00. Following the meeting Esther Esmyol will give members a guided tour of the William Fehr ceramic collection.

The AGM will look back at 2009 and plan for 2010 particularly marketing and promoting the Association confirming our relevance in the new technological age.

One Roof Studio is a creative space for artistic types. We offer an exciting shared studio environment for artists of all disciplines.

You get ample personal desk space plus access to huge shared tables to work on. Our facilities include: dedicated shelves, kitchenette and kiln (firing cost applies). Located in the Biscuit Mill complex in Woodstock, there is 24 hour access and security, plus free parking after 1830. In addition we hold a monthly Open Studio Event, where we invite the public into the studio, and our artists can sell commission free.
