Jug Exhibition coming to TheSpaceBetween

TheSpaceBetweenGallery is putting on a Jug Exhibition for as large a variety of jugs as we can find including some beautiful Art Deco pieces, so if you have jugs in your studio please bring them along to our Gallery at Peta’s Place, 18, 2^nd Street, Abbotsford, Johannesburg on Friday 21 April between 10 and 12 am.  The exhibition will open at 6pm on Tuesday 26 April and run until 10 May.  We will forward you an invitations to send on to your friends and family.

This exhibition will be followed later in May by a Teapot Exhibition so, once again, we would love to see what you can let us have for that exhibition. Exact date of exhibition to be supplied shortly.

If you would like to participate in either of these exhibitions, please let us know – we need to know before the end of this week, even if, in the case of the teapots, they are not yet  made or finished, we would like to know that you hope to have some to enter.

THE SPACE BETWEEN GALLERY @ PETA’S PLACE

Towards the end of 2015 Wendy Goldblatt well-known ceramicist and Peta Hunter established stylist & exhibition curator joined forces to open a gallery specializing in ceramics and ceramic sculpture.  The idea came about as Wendy felt there aren’t enough outlets to showcase and sell ceramics in Gauteng.

The Space Between at Peta’s Place opened in October with an exhibition of Lisa Firer’s porcelain tea lights and vessels.  It was followed by Lalage Hunter with her carved terracotta pots and Wendy Goldblatt’s boldy decorated porcelain bowls and in December a group exhibition was held of Original Objects which consisted of exquisitely handcrafted jewellery, fabrics and ceramics.  All three exhibitions were very successful and well received. Visitors loved the ambience of the space and have indicated an interest in  future exhibitions and activities .

In February we are opening with some ceramic history -  an unusual exhibition of a collection of original art deco vessels & objects. 

This will be followed by an exhibition of jugs of all shapes, sizes and uses,  and after that a teapot exhibition of intriguing & imaginative teapots. If you would like to participate in either the jug or the teapot exhibition, please let us know as soon as possible or start making either or both!

We also intend to show ceramic sculptures both small and large as we have a beautiful garden space for larger outdoor work.

We will be holding one man shows, group exhibitions and special themed exhibitions throughout the year.

We are currently looking for potters who have existing work they would like to show or who are planning an exhibition and/ or who would be interested in making pieces for one of our specific forthcoming exhibitions. Remember, our exhibition of jugs will be coming up soon and we would be delighted if you would enter some pieces for this exhibition.

Drury Brandt Benefit Exhibition

Drury is a Fellow of Ceramics Southern Africa and has been a selector and judge at CSA exhibitions. He has presented numerous workshops whereby he shared his knowledge and passion for hand building. Drury has also won many awards for his ceramics. He has work in various public and private collections in South Africa and abroad as well as in the permanent Corobrik Collection at the Pretoria Art Museum.

 

Exploring creativity and the magic of clay inspire him. The vessel's capacity in human service stimulates his interest albeit from a non functional art based perspective.  He leans towards a casual and free approach in decoration being much influenced by the abstract expressionist movement. The work of Alison Britton, Maltby, Sandy Brown, Hans Coper and Voulkos excite and stimulate him.

Please join us for a benefit exhibition to alleviate some of the extremely high medical bills that Drury has incurred recently. Despite both his wife Diana and his own medical challenges, Drury has maintained a positive outlook on life and has managed to get into his studio at every opportunity to make work. We can only admire his tenacity.

This collection explores the concept of home and what it means to belong, as the artist expounds on the journey of identity and belonging which is captured in the lives and narratives of three generations of female protagonists. Don't miss what promises to be an enriching morning with this talented young artist.

Discovering Home

This exhibition centres on the concept of home and what it means to belong. This journey of identity and belonging is captured in the lives and narratives of three generations of female protagonists. The catalyst for this exhibition was the discovery of my own dislocated identity after immigrating to the Netherlands at the age of thirteen. I discovered that my mother and my grandmother had suffered a similar trauma in that their identities were also fractured and dislocated due to moving between Southern Africa and the Netherlands throughout their lives.

The work is linked to memories of the protagonists; it is rooted in my mother’s memories of her mother and my memories and perceptions of my grandmother and my mother. Researching my family’s history of dislocation revealed a wealth of stories and imaginings that I was unaware of.   An exploration of the cultural dislocation of three generations of women in my family became the guiding force for this body of work. Spanning this body of work to include three generations gives me the opportunity to reflect on how time and space affects identity and the type of dislocation that is felt. Even though the three protagonists share a sense of cultural dislocation, the circumstances and extent of this dislocation was different for each protagonist. The type of dislocation that occurs is dependent on a particular time and the geographical space each protagonist inhabited.

The exhibition juxtaposes Southern Africa and the Netherlands in an inter-personal cultural context. Culture and identity are inextricably linked concepts and I investigate the difficulties experienced by the protagonists in their pursuit of negotiating what it means to have a dislocated cultural identity.

This exhibition consists of an installation of porcelain works and drawings that reflect a personal interpretation of the garden, using both fine art and botanical approaches.

The porcelain works and drawings explore plant forms and garden implements.  While the garden is traditionally seen as a “piece of ground” (Allen,1990:485) adjoining a house, this exhibition explores the garden as representing   growth, adornment, and  refuge; a reflection of metamorphosis and life cycles, migration, and the changing of seasons. This transience and fragility is echoed in the use of porcelain, itself delicate and translucent.

The exhibition postulates the garden as a metaphor of our lives; representative of our present, yet intrinsically linked with our past in terms of self, culture, spirituality, circumstance, emotion, social standing, labour and the heritage of colonialism.   This heritage is explored using indigenous and exotic plants from my garden and the Botanic Gardens.

This interpretation of the garden encourages the viewer to personalise, re-think and re-conceptualise past gardens of memory, and those of the present in a way which both make the garden meaningful, tangible and uniquely relevant to their lives.
In addition, it demonstrates the importance of the garden, whether public or private, as a reflection of our lives.
