DRURY BRANDT CERAMIC COURSES

I recently advertised comprehensive courses out of my new studio in Rivonia, namely weekdays, Monday to Thursday 9.30 am  to 1.00 pm  for October and November, at R1,800 for the 4 weeks course.
Response from another region (KZN) has requested that I conduct the course over weekends, i.e. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Additionally a couple of local Potters have also found this option to be attractive.
On consideration I would also enjoy this option, as I think it may give more cohesion and flow to the instruction.
In addition, I am able to supply accommodation on my premises for the 'Out of Towners’ if needs be.
November the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th weekend is booked already, but I do have one more place.
Hereunder is the original advert. - all the details are applicable for the weekend course as well.
Another gap has identified with weekends, in that after lunch, those who may be staying 'in residence' may wish to use a further 2 hours to 4 pm.
This would be entirely optional, at R200 for each day, and could also include locals.  A light lunch would be provided for those as well.

Kindest regards,
Drury Brandt

To launch my NEW CERAMIC STUDIO in Rivonia I am offering a series of Specialist Hand Building Courses during October and November, commencing on Monday 30th September through to, and including Thursday 28th November 2013.

Course blocks consist of classes one day a week for four weeks, from Monday to Thursday from 9.30 am to 1.00 pm.

Participants will be taken through a total exercise of clay slab preparation, making of items, decoration by various methods, both pre- and post Bisc firings and final glazing.

I will demonstrate and assist participants with my techniques and methodology, the shortcuts I have learnt whilst doing many courses and workshops I have attended both here in South Africa and overseas.

I will share my knowledge of glaze making and recipes of the glazes I use.

All work will be fired in oxidation and, time permitting, I will try to fit in some RAKU as well.

Tools and materials will be supplied but participants should bring their own specialist tools and under glazes.

Cost is R1,800.00 for the four week course, payable at registration.

Parking is secure and inside on the property.

I can be contacted by cell on 082 574 5800 and on e-mail at drury@tiscali.co.za.

MASTER CLASSES with Elsbeth Burkhalter

The time is right again to get together to celebrate the earth and the elements with a pit firing. Packing the pit, stoking the fire and discovering the unexpected the next morning is quite magical and always a wonderful group experience.
In August and September the master class is exploring saggar and pit firing.
As a preparation for the large pit firing which is scheduled for the end of September we focus first on experimenting with various kind of saggars using combinations of oxides, chlorides and various organic substances including some black firing saggars. The work needs to be small for the saggars (not bigger than 15 cm in all dimensions) while the work for the pit may be as large as 40 cm.
Suitable clays, slips and terra sigillata will be available. You will be guided as to what shapes and building techniques are suitable, instructed in the ways of burnishing and the making and application of terra sigillata and coloured slips if needed. Work can be finished at home if you need more time. Both pots and sculpture are suitable for these firings.
At this stage 4 places are still available for this class which is limited and booking is essential.
The class is held at my studio every Wednesday morning from 9.30 to 12.30 starting on the 1st of August till the 19th September. The pit firing is scheduled for the 22nd of September with the opening of the pit the next morning.
Cost: R 3 200 - all material and firings included

December Workshops at The Pottery Studio

We are planning 3 exciting workshops for December at The Pottery Studio, 24 Old Kilcullen Road, Bryanston, that you may be interested in attending;

Beer and Horesehair firings Tuesday 6th December 2pm onwards (about 2 hours)
v     Participants will have the opportunity to fire their pots in beer or using the horse hair technique! Bisqued pots need to be brought to the studio by 12 noon on the day before the firing - Monday 5th December, so they can be loaded in the outside kiln for firing early on Tuesday morning. The kiln will be ready to remove the pots around 2pm so that is when the fun begins and participants arrive!
v     Each person may fire 3 items – approx. 15cms X 15cms (let us know if you have something different in mind) Choose whether you want beer or horsehair!
v     If you need to use the studio to make your 3 items you may join any regular weekly class between now and the firing, and pay an additional R250 to make your items. Classes are Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings between 9.30am and 12.30pm or evenings on Tuesday or Wednesdays between 6pm and 9pm. Please let us know if you’d like this option.
v     We will do the dangerous work of removing the pots from the red hot kiln – you get to take the masterpieces home the same afternoon.

Bottles by Donve Branch – fired using horsehair technique
Beer fired cats by Colleen & Michelle
Price for workshop – R200 (R450 if you choose the option to also attend a class to make your work) (We always need horsehair, please let us know if you have contacts.)

Funky Teapots Monday 12th December 9.30am to 1pm (3.5 hours)
v     Participants will each be given a 2-cuppa traditional Teapot, Milk jug and Sugar bowl in bisc. Michelle will give a short presentation to stimulate ideas – Art Deco, Impressionists, Festive, or whatever takes your fancy.
v     Firing and glazing will be done ready for Christmas.
v     Bring your own underglaze paints, brushes, 3D etc to qualify for low price of R300 all inclusive
v     Use studio underglaze paints if you do not have your own yet – R350 all inclusive

Price for bisc, firing and glazing – R300 (R350 if you use studio underglazes)
The Human Figure – Sketches in Clay Monday 19th December 9.30am to 3.30pm (5 hours with 1 hour lunch break)
