We have ample space, extensive facilities and safe parking.

December Workshops at The Pottery Studio

We are planning3 exciting workshops for December at The Pottery Studio, 24 Old Kilcullen Road, Bryanston,that you may be interested in attending;

Beer andHoresehair firings Tuesday 6^th December 2pm onwards (about 2hours)

v    Participants will have the opportunity to fire their pots in beer orusing the horse hair technique! Bisqued pots need to be brought to the studioby 12 noon on the day before the firing - Monday 5^th December, sothey can be loaded in the outside kiln for firing early on Tuesday morning. Thekiln will be ready to remove the pots around 2pm so that is when the fun beginsand participants arrive!
v    Each person may fire 3 items – approx. 15cms X 15cms (let us know if youhave something different in mind) Choosewhether you want beer or horsehair!
v    If you need to use the studio to make your 3 items you may join anyregular weekly class between now and the firing, and pay an additional R250 tomake your items. Classes are Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings between9.30am and 12.30pm or evenings on Tuesday or Wednesdays between 6pm and 9pm.Please let us know if you’d like this option.
v    We will do the dangerous work of removing the pots from the red hot kiln– you get to take the masterpieces home the same afternoon.

In Dialogue With the Tea Bowl

This is a reminder to book for the short course In dialogue with the tea bowl which starts on Wednesday the 12th October with the participation in a Japanese Tea Ceremony held at the Japanese School at 12 – 20 Caledon Road, Emmarentia. This is a rare opportunity to experience and learn about a beautiful part of Japanese tradition.

I have changed the second week’s class to Tuesday, 18th October to accommodate Clarissa Hawthorn, former lecturer in ceramic history at the University of South Africa who has kindly agreed give us a talk and Power Point presentation on the philosophy of wabi sabi before we embark on the making of the tea bowls.

IN DIALOGUE WITH THE TEA BOWL

The aim of this course is to investigate the tea bowl, its origin, tradition and function. It is run as two modules.

MODULE ONE

The roots of the tea bowl are explored by first participating in a Japanese Tea Ceremony followed by making traditional Japanese tea bowls which will be fired in a Raku process. The history of Raku will be illustrated and explained in a short PP presentation.

October 12^th – participation in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony performed at the Japanese School by a member of the Japanese Tea ceremony Association time 09.30 for 10.00-12.00
October 18^th –talk by Clarissa Hawthorn, former lecturer at University of Johannesburg in ceramic history on the philosophy of wabi sabi
– making tea bowls using the wheel or pinching then carving the traditional way

Former curator at the Nelson Mandela Art Museum, Wendy Gers currently lectures at l’Ecole Supérieure d’Art et de Design, Valenciennes, France. She has authored various museum catalogue articles, and published in journals including Art South Africa, Ceramic Review, Stephen Welz & Sotheby's etc. She completed her MA (cum laude) on South African potteries from the 1950s and is currently undertaking her doctoral studies at the University of the Arts, London. Gers is a Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg.

Southern African Ceramics Workshop

9pm-1am (with a tea break) Southern African Ceramics Workshop: An overview of principal Modern potteries in Southern Africa, including a consideration of the problematics associated with the integration of indigenous traditions into Modern Western media (glazed stoneware domestic and artistic pottery).

The morning commences with a review of major trends and landmarks in Southern African ceramics from the 1950s to present. This will be followed with an informal round-table, where participants (potters / ceramists / artists) will requested to bring a work for discussion, and offer their opinion on 'where to now' with respect to their own work.

1pm-2pm Lunch (light lunch -- sandwiches provided)

2pm-3pm Lecture: SA Ceramics Industry 1655-1950 - The Colonial Cringe - A Postcolonial Perspective.

This lecture will survey the establishment of the ceramics industry in South Africa, from the earliest VOC pottery to the post-war period. Why did South Africa have such difficult time establishing a ceramics industry. The industry struggled intensely against a variety of difficulties, including the flotsam and jetsam of imported British and European ceramics. The lecture will also consider other factors influencing the industry, especially a sense of psychological inferiority experienced by the young nation. As we will see, the colonial cringe endured well into postcolonial period...

Carolyn Heydenrych’s Workshop in Magaliesburg

Join me in my farm house for two lovely days of clay. You will build and decorate your own stoneware pot, and I will demonstrate the making of a teapot. Beginners are welcome.

The workshop will run over Saturday the 9^th and Sunday the 10^th of July. I will provide Teas and hot Lunches. Magaliesburg is just over an hour’s drive from Sandton, and there are a number of B&Bs close by for accommodation.

The cost of the workshop is R1 200,00

Carolyn is an Architect, but has decided to devote her time to ceramics. She builds vessels with strong architectural imagery, ranging from large stoneware vessels to more delicate porcelain teapots and lamps. Her tea set won the Premier prize at the CSA Gauteng Regional in 2010, and was acquired for the Corobrik Collection.

An intimate week-end workshop celebrating this ancient and time-honoured firing method; for ceramicists, potters and other romantics wanting to have work fired in a wood-fired kiln. Specialised attention to all attendees.

Gauteng members will start the year with a well known international artist, Paul Young, presenting our first workshop – free to members.
Paul makes two major statements on his website:
“My aim is to fulfil a need, a desire and a passion for making”
“My hope is to convey a joy, narrative and intrigue for the viewer”
He has been working with clay for more than twenty-five years , being influenced mainly by English earthenware, slipware and European folk art.
His studio is a converted Victorian railway station in the Midlands from which he produces exciting decorative and domestic pieces which he shows at most of the major ceramic fairs in the U.K.
His work also features in many private and public collections, including the New York Metropolitan Museum.
Paul will start the workshop with a power point presentation giving a delightful insight into his “world of clay” and will then deconstrate his signature decorative work and domestic pieces which he will use to show us his slip trailing techniques.
This is certainly a workshop you will not want to miss.

Workshops on Low Firing Reduction with Elsbeth Burkhalter

Reduction firings have always been my passion and the main reason why I make things in clay. As a mad pyromaniac I am offering two participating workshops in March and April 2011. I have limited participation for both workshops to 10 people to be able to give everyone my full attention and guidance.
There will be a 20% price reduction if both workshops are booked at the same time.

Raku workshop
This workshop is intended for people who want to experience a Raku firing, learn how to make up simple glazes, build a simple kiln and get familiar with various post firing methods. We will work with traditional lustre Raku glazes and the “naked Raku” effect.
Participants will bring 4 bisque pots made according to specifications that I will mail to people who have booked. I will also provide slips and terra sigillata if wanted. Notes with glaze recipes, materials used and firing techniques are available on completion of the workshop.
The workshop will be held on Saturday, 5th March 2011 from 9 a.m – 5 p.m at my studio
Bring lunch to share, Tea and Coffee will be provided. Cost R 1000 inclusive.

Smoke Firings in an Urban Environment
In this workshop you will explore various ways of saggar firing (black and multi colour effects) and simulate a pit firing in a barrel. The workshop will be held over a weekend.
For out of town participants accommodation for 2-3 people can be provided as I also run a bed & breakfast business under the name of Kingfisher Lodge (see my page on Facebook) reduced rates will apply.
Participants may bring up to 8 pots made to instructions received by mail after booking. Terra Sigillata will be provided at the same time. On completion of the workshop you will also receive notes.
The workshop will be held at my studio Saturday 3rd April 9 am to 4 pm and Sunday 4th April 9 am to 1 pm. Bring lunch to share, tea and coffee provided. Cost: R 1200 inclusive.

The Department of UP Arts at the University of Pretoria presents one hundred and one of some of the rarest and most valuable ceramics ranging between 2400 BC to contemporary ceramics from the vast collections of the University of Pretoria on a public exhibition from 14 July 2010

The 101 ceramics of the University of Pretoria exhibition presents a selection of ceramics originating from Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, China, South America, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Siam, Thailand, Holland, Germany, The Netherlands, France Denmark, South America and South Africa and have never before been exhibited together, nor on such large scale. This exciting exhibition showcases the diversity and uniqueness of the University of Pretoria’s Ceramic Collections This exhibition provides a view of the wide range of ceramics from nearly each continent and explains how the ceramics were shaped, fired and sometimes glazed. A large range of utensils such as pots, jars, vases and other containers are shown, but also ceramic sculptures and commemorative ware including studio ceramics by famous South African potters are on display.

Michelle has over 25 years Ceramic experience and studied and worked closely with Nesta Nala. Michelle has exhibited her work locally and internationally and is holding a workshop for all levels of ceramicists from beginners to advanced. Take advantage of the wealth of experience that Michelle has to offer by exploring hand-building techniques made famous by our wonderful South African potters. Michelle has her Masters in Ceramic design from the University of Johannesburg.

Dear Ceramics SA members,

Yes, sandstone is HARD and it is HEAVY, somehow I had underestimated both aspects, and I put quite a lot of strain on my trailer and two 4x4 s, which mastered the task of transporting the stone the 80km from Fouriesburg to Clocolan bravely.

Putting the stones into position was also backbreaking work, thankfully we had the help of some very willing and slightly bemused farm labour

Once our stones were firmly placed on tables, the actual process of chiseling into the stone was fairly straight forward. Some special chisels called ‘points’, or ‘Spitzeisen’ were given to us by Florian, together with a one pound hammer and / or a wooden mallet. With a vague image in our heads, and some references from books as to what we wanted to carve we got to work.

I found that I entered into a kind of ‘dialogue’ with the stone and slowly but surely the shape revealed itself but not without changes that somehow came from the stone.

As ceramicists, most of us are fairly strong and used to carrying weight. Therefore strong arms together with a good rhythm patience and tenacity, as well as the occasional help of the angle grinder get you a long way.

The whole experience was so opposite to that of building up with clay, however the naturalness and honesty of the material would, I think, appeal to all ceramicists.

What I love most, is that I need not fettle, fire or glaze my sculpture , it stands proudly at my entrance as testimony to a good hard working weekend in one of the most beautiful parts of our country.

We hope to do this again next year, and hope to see you there.

How to make a ceramic sculpture

This workshop will give a brief and insightful demonstration on how to create a ceramic sculpture. Basic skills will be demonstrated as well as a chance to experiment on your own sculpture during the workshop. The aim of the workshop is to give the participant some insightful ideas and techniques on how to make a ceramic sculpture, from the making of the armature, preparation of the clay, modelling skills will be practiced using photographic reference, and preparation of sculpture for firing will be demonstrated.

Basic program:

* Demonstration: How to construct a simple armature designed for a ceramic sculpture
* Experience:
Starting the modelling process – proportions- marks and expression- working from photographs
* Demonstration: Preparation of sculpture for firing

These are 2 firing tecniques introduced to me by Irish ceramic artist Jane Jermyn at her workshop in Port Elizabeth.
With her blessing in the spirit that potters share, we are holding a ceramic workshop for these firings.
Jane Jermyn, www.janejermynceramics.com makes beautifully judged organic sculptural forms using her wet firing technique. The creations are put together using oxides, slip, basketry, thin pre-fired porcelain forms, organic matter and various clays, fired in a gas kiln sopping wet. Its a fast firing from the beginning to over 1 100 deg C, rendering beautiful colour, tone and texture in these sculptural forms.
Jane says that the elemental nature of clay excite her as do geological formations, strata and textures. She sees her work as a celebration of nature, through the transformation of clay by fire.
Participants will make their own sculptures as described above and they will be fired at the workshop. A demo will be done to give participants an idea of what its all about.
Jane has traveled extensively over the world demonstrating this technique and in so doing learnt other techniques including Obvaru firing, which involves dipping pre heated bisque ware into a batter recipe rendering beautifully mottled and organic results.

Participants need:
2 bisque pots (max 15cm)
Should you wish to make your own pre-fired thin irregular strip forms, make 3 from a white bodied clay (of about 5mm thick and between 10 & 20cm long).

International Museum Day is an initiative of the International Council for Museums (ICOM). The day has been celebrated all over the world on 18 May since 1977. In 1992, the Advisory Committee decided to suggest a theme for Museum Day each year, and this year's theme is Museums for social harmony.

ICOM invites museum professionals to use International Museum Day as a platform for promoting the work of their institutions to the public, drawing the attention of supervisory bodies and governments to the role and needs of museums, and fostering dialogue between professionals and across disciplines. International Museum Day provides museum professionals with the opportunity to interact with the public and to make them aware of the challenges that museums face.

On this day, museums promote the idea that they are an important means of cultural exchange and enrichment, and developing mutual understanding, co-operation and peace.

The Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Department of the City of Tshwane will be celebrating International Museum Day by giving the public free admittance to the Pretoria Art Museum, the Melrose House Museum and the Fort Klapperkop Heritage Site during the week of 18 to 21 May. All three these museums are managed by the City of Tshwane.

Schools and groups are welcome to visit the museums and book guided tours during this week, but bookings must be in advance as space is limited. Entrance will be free, but the guided tours have to be paid for, and schools have to arrange their own transport.

It will happen during the two last weeks of May and will be for members only. There will be throwing demonstrations during the middle week-end of the exhibition. Venue to be determined.

Colour exhibition
At the cube (Rust-en-Vrede Gallery, Cape Town). 90 pieces on this theme will be displayed during August.

Ron Belling exhibition
This event will be our Regional competition: CSA-Eastern Cape Regional. Various sponsors will commit and there will be different prizes categories.
Submit 7 pieces maximum.
To be dropped off at the gallery between 15 august and 1st September.
People from far away (country members) can send pictures via email.
Opening on Tuesday 2nd of November (will run until end of November but pieces will be kept over December).
The gallery takes 25% commission.
People selected will be asked for an entry fee for costs of opening.
The pieces rewarded by prizes will still be up for sale.

Nationals
This will happen in October and the selection for Eastern Cape pieces will be made in PE on +/- the 20th of September by John Shirley, the traveling selector.

• John Shirley is coming from Johannesburg on +/- the 20th of September and will give a workshop. Fees: R100 for members and R150 for non-members.

After a short break at 10:30 Eugene Hon and John Shirley will conduct a critique of work as they would at the University of Johannesburg, where they are both lecturers in the department of Ceramic Design. The Western Cape Region of Ceramics Southern Africa is having their Annual General Meeting on Saturday 13 March 2010 at the Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town.

The proceedings will start at 09H00 with a light breakfast followed by the meeting at 10H00. Following the meeting Esther Esmyol will give members a guided tour of the William Fehr ceramic collection.

The AGM will look back at 2009 and plan for 2010 particularly marketing and promoting the Association confirming our relevance in the new technological age.

CLAY PORTRAITURE WORKSHOP in March

Venue: Caroline Vieira’s studio : 35 Galway Rd, Parkview

Session 1:
After a powerpoint introduction to styles and approaches to sculpting a portrait,
we will sculpt a basic skull onto an armature and study its proportions .

Session 2:
Working with photographs and drawings of their chosen models, students will be guided
through the process of achieving a likeness whilst learning about the anatomy of the face.

Session 3:
Continue working on the portraits. Students may bring their models to sit for them.

Session 4:
Continued work on the sculptures, and discussions on finishes ,textures and expressions of the face.

Depending on level of completion of work, the pieces will be removed from the armature and hollowed out for firing
Or students may have the option of making a cement fondue head during weekly lessons

Dates: every Wednesday, 10th, 17th ,24th and 31st of March
Times: 6pm to 9pm

Cost: R 1500 per person including materials. Tools and armatures will be provided.
A 50% deposit will be required to secure your place

Potting Around is a ceramic art studio and mosaic workshop which has been in operation for the last 15 years. We have been the owners since January 2009. We host ceramic painting parties for children and adults (including kitchen teas and team building events). We also host mosaic parties for adults and children.

We have a wide variety of raw bisque to paint and our selection of paints is vast. We do all the glazing and firing in-house, as well as grouting for mosaic items. We also cast many of our bisque items and have a selection of moulds.
We have 2 kilns in our studio and have two very experienced staff members who are both excellent artists as well as proficient in firing, glazing and casting.

Unfortunately, due to the financial recession, our business has not been doing well and we are looking at closing our shop at the end of March.

As you will realise, we have many items for sale, including moulds, bisque-ware, paints, two kilns, wooden items to mosaic and mosaic tiles (both whole and pre-cut) and mosaic tools.

We are wondering if any of your members would be interested in buying any of the above. We would need to know fairly soon as the end of March is around the corner.

In addition, if any of your members are looking for staff, I can highly recommend both employees who currently work for me.

Ceramist Nikki Swanepoel finalist in Spier Contemporary

After an exhaustive nation-wide selection process 100 artists and over 130 art pieces have been chosen for South Africa’s largest contemporary art exhibition, the Spier Contemporary 2010. The Africa Centre’s art biennale, the Spier Contemporary 2010 will launch on the 14th March 2010 at the Cape Town City Hall.

The artworks were selected from a national call for submissions, with artworks collected at thirteen selection centres across South Africa. The final exhibition was chosen from over 2,700 entries, which represents an increase of 10% on the submissions received for the Spier Contemporary 2007/8. The selection was made in November and December 2009 by a curatorial team of five local and continental industry professionals.

Work has begun on the Cape Town City Hall, where the first leg of the Exhibition will be held. The Spier Contemporary has commissioned architect Nabeel Essa to design the exhibition. Nabeel’s vision is to contrast the contemporary nature of the artworks against the historic grandeur of the Edwardian building.

Ceramist Nikki Swanepoel was is one of the Finalists. "Well it was a huge surprise, one could enter 5 pieces and I entered 4, including a selection of my best cattle heads (and one horse) of the past year or so (since the National in 2008). I thought the collection of heads would be too figurative for a progressive show like this, and would probably not be selected, but as these particular heads showed some of my most experimental and successful surfaces (I think), I though, what the heck, enter them. And, to my surprise, the installation with heads named "Rydiere" was selected. The second entry that reached the final is a group of four skulls I call "the First Family". All four pieces made the semi-final stage of the selections, which I was chuffed with already, so I was really happy that 2 of the 4 made the finals. Opening on 13 March in the Town Hall - it should be a special event as the Town hall is beautifual but has fallen into disuse, and is being reveived especailly for this." says Swanepoel.

Porcelain Workshop

FOR BEGINNERS AND ADVANCED STUDENTS
FEBRUARY 2010

It has become apparent to me that there is a tremendous need for general and specialised instruction in the making of Porcelain in all it’s wonderful manifestations.

At the end of last year I started experimenting with different available porcelain bodies as well as making up a number of casting slips and have decided to offer a series of classes looking at exploring and working with Porcelain.

This course caters for absolute beginners and advanced students and anything that falls between these two categories. The course will be tailor-designed for each student’s individual needs.

We will also have visiting Porcelain Artists & Makers who are daily practitioners in this unique field of ceramic endeavour. Some of the people who will be visiting and sharing their knowledge with us are Katherine Glenday, Lisa Firer and Carolyn Heydenrych. Their work is featured on my gallery blog. The classes will be on a morning for three hours during the week.

Gauteng AGM and David Walters workshop

Notice is hereby given that the 30th Annual General Meeting of the Gauteng Region of Ceramics Southern Africa will be held at the Tshwane South College, Centurion Campus, Pretoria on Saturday, 20 February 2010 at 09:00 for 09:30.

To coincide with the AGM:

David Walters, well known Cape ceramist, will be the guest presenter. He will give a presentation and talk on his own work and demonstrate his considerable skills on the wheel and in his decorating and firing processes. David has a great ability to inform and entertain as he works and his workshop should put us all into the right frame of mind as we develop our own work for the year.

After the AGM, David will commence the workshop with his presentation and talk. We will then break for lunch, whereafter David will commence the demonstration part of his workshop.

Refreshments will be available from 08:45 to 09:30 before the commencement of proceedings. The lunch break will be from 13:00 to 14:00. Please bring your own lunch – tea and coffee will be provided. Proceedings should conclude at approx. 16:00-16:30.

Traditional Smoke Firing

Smoke firing is an ancient traditional African technique. Pots are usually handmade using the coiling technique and the surface may be burnished prior to firing by rubbing with a suitable instrument of wood, steel or stone, to produce a polished finish that survives firing. It is possible to produce very highly polished wares when fine clays are used, or when the polishing is carried out on wares that have been partially dried and contain little water, though wares in this condition are extremely fragile and the risk of breakage is high.

An interesting method is used by Nic Sithole when his hand coiled pots are highly burnished and bisc fired in an electric kiln to 900 °C before the smoke firing. The pot is then covered with cardboard and newspaper, which is set alight. This second smoke firing takes about 20 - 30 minutes and the results are unpredictable and always very exciting. The pot is taken from the hot fire and polished immediately using ordinary floor polish. Once completely cooled, the pot is again polished until the surface is shiny. Only then can the artist see whether he has the results he was hoping to achieve.

Our first workshop of the year is an illustrated talk by Professor Ian Calder, followed by a slide show of images of current British Ceramics given by Lynette Morris-Hale

'South African Studio Ceramics ‘ by Ian Calder
This talk takes us to our roots and hopefully, by understanding our roots , we can make work that is authentic. Prof Calder will be discussing 'South African studio ceramics of the 1960s and 70s'. His talk, illustrated with slides, will look at some stonewares of the 1960s by founding SA studio ceramists (such as Esias Bosch, Marietjie van der Merwe, Hyme Rabinowitz, Tim Morris, and Gordon Mbatha for example) and ask pottery questions like:
- Can the influence of Bernard Leach can be detected in our local forms, glazes and imagery? And Oriental ceramics?
- Is there any of the spirit of the Hippie era expressed in the pottery?
- Do the ceramics express any ideas about South African locality?
-Reflections on contemporary SA ceramics (Rorke's Drift Pottery , Ardmore Studio, the Nala family, Clive Sithole, Ian Garrett)

Weekend Sculpture Workshop Presented by Karen Murray

Sculpting figures is one of the oldest art forms in existence. Starting with sketching the model, participants will learn about facial structure and how to age and add expression to portraiture.
The 2 day workshop is suitable for beginners and even those who have never tried their hand at sculpture before. Accept the challenge if you are interested in improving your skills, or developing skills that can be applied to other aspects of your creative work.

After studying Fine Art at the Durban Institute of Technology, Karen received her Fine Art Diploma in 1985. Karen has been involved in the Film and Television Industry for the past 22 years where in the Art Department her skills included Art Directing, Sculpting, Model making, Scenic Painting and Special Effects Make-up. Karen has worked on many International and Local Feature Films and Commercials. From 2000 to 2003 Karen was Head of the Art and Special Effects Make up Department at City Varsity Film, T.V. and Multimedia School in Cape Town. Karen received her Btech Degree in Ceramic Design at the University of Johannesburg in 2008. At the 2009 Gauteng Regional Ceramics exhibition, Karen received the Potters Supplies & Mail Order Award for her Bone China vessels.

A SIMPLE TIP TO REDUCE THE CRACKING OF THROWN FLATWARE:

THE BIGGEST CAUSE OF CRACKING IN FLATWARE IS THE USE OF GUT FOR CUTTING THROUGH THE WORK. TRY SUBSTITUTING A TWISTED CUTTING WIRE FOR THE GUT AND YOU WILL BE SURPRISED. THE PROBLEM WITH GUT IS THAT IT IS SMOOTH AND OFTEN THE ITEMS RE-STICK AFTER CUTTING THROUGH, AND HENCE THE CRACKING WHICH SOMETIMES ONLY SHOWS UP IN THE GLAZE FIRING. THE TWISTED WIRE DOES A MORE EFFICIENT JOB OF RELEASING THE WARE FROM THE WHEEL OR BAT AND GREATLY REDUCES RISK OF CRACKING

THIS EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE, LITTLE USED TECHNIQUE, OPENS MANY POSSIBILITIES TO THE POTTER LOOKING FOR AN UNUSUAL WAY OF DECORATION.

MOCHAWARE IS CREATED BY USING A MOCHA TEA WHICH IS MADE FROM AN INFUSION OF TOBACCO MIXED WITH COLOURING OXIDE. THIS IS APPLIED TO A FRESHLY APPLIED AREA OF SLIP AND ALLOWED TO FLOW DOWN THE SURFACE CREATING FINE VEINED TREE-LIKE DESIGNS WHICH CAN BE USED TO CREATE A VARIETY OF DECORATIONS AS WELL AS MAKING INTERESTING ‘LANDSCAPE’ PAINTINGS ON POTS.

TO MAKE THE ‘TEA’ ADD THE TOBACCO FROM ONE CIGARETTE TO ONE TABLESPOON OF BOILING WATER. ALLOW TO COOL AND THEN ADD ABOUT A TEASPOON OF MANGANESE DIOXIDE OR OTHER COLOURING OXIDE OR CERAMIC STAIN. MIX WELL AND STRAIN OUT THE TOBACCO. AS A BASE SLIP REGULAR CASTING SLIP, FINELY SIEVED SEEMS TO GIVE THE BEST RESULTS.

TAKE A LEATHER HARD POT, DIP INTO SLIP, AND IMMEDIATELY APPLY SMALL DROPS OF ‘TEA’ WITH A LOADED BRUSH TO THE PIECE, ALLOWING IT TO FLOW DOWN THE SLIPPED AREA CREATING THE VEIN-LIKE DECORATION.

THE PIECE IS THEN ALLOWED TO DRY AND CAN BE FURTHER DECORATED IF REQUIRED, AND THEN BISQUE FIRED IN THE USUAL WAY.

ONE CAN EXPERIMENT WITH GLAZE IN COMBINATION WITH THIS TECHNIQUE ALTHOUGH I HAVE ALWAYS LEFT PIECES I HAVE PRODUCED WITH THIS TECHNIQUE UNGLAZED.

THIS IS A RELATIVELY SIMPLE TECHNIQUE WHICH COULD BE COMBINED WITH BRUSHWORK TO PRODUCE SOME EXCITING RESULTS. TRY SOME AND HAVE SOME FUN!

Harrie, himself, has a fine collection of South African ceramics and will bring a different perspective to the selections.

WILMA CRUISE has accepted the invitation to be the award judge. This judging will take place on Friday, 9 October, after the exhibition has been set up.

One of our leading ceramists and member of Ceramics Southern Africa, John Shirley, gave us the following tip on Wax Resist.

WAX RESIST

WAX RESIST CAN BE USED AT MANY STAGES OF THE POT’S DEVELOPMENT BUT AT THE GREEN STAGE SEEMS TO BE APPROPRIATE, BECAUSE THE BISCUIT FIRING WHICH FOLLOWS WILL BURN OUT THE WAX. I FIND A MIX OF 1 PACKET OF WHITE CANDLES TO 1 CUP OF PARAFFIN TO BE AN EXCELLENT MIX FOR HOT WAX. HEAT CAREFULLY UNTIL IT IS JUST BEGINNING TO SMOKE FOR OPTIMUM RESULTS. ALTERNATIVELY A ‘COLD’ EMULSION WAX CAN BE USED. THE WAX IS APPLIED TO THE DESIGN TO BE RESISTED WITH EITHER A BRUSH OR SPONGE APPLICATOR. SLIP OR OXIDE IS APPLIED OVER THE PIECE WHEN DRY (IMMEDIATELY WITH HOT WAX, ABOUT ONE HOUR WITH COLD WAX).

THE WAX WILL RESIST THE OXIDE LEAVING A FEW ‘BEADS’ ON THE SURFACE OF THE WAX. TRADITIONALLY THIS IS CONSIDERED PART OF THE EFFECT. THE PIECE IS THEN BISQUE FIRED WHICH BURNS OUT THE WAX AS WELL AS PREPARING THE POT FOR GLAZE. THE POT WOULD THEN BE GLAZED AND FIRED IN THE USUAL WAY. MAKE SURE THAT THE GLAZE YOU ARE USING WILL LET THE OXIDE YOU HAVE USED SHOW THROUGH AFTER FIRING!
